The System Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship is responsible for the development, implementation and oversight of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) policies and procedures in collaboration with health system and hospital leadership and relevant stakeholders. The Medical Director is responsible for overall quality, safety, regulatory activities and performance excellence.
Roles and Responsibility
The primary role will be to serve as the Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship for Henry Ford Health.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to improving and reducing hospital-acquired infection (HAI) rates; providing subject matter expertise in IPC, healthcare epidemiology and antimicrobial stewardship; optimizing utilization ofdiagnostic testing and antimicrobials with subsequent implementation of IPC and diagnostic and antimicrobial stewardship process improvement efforts; development and implementation of IPC and ASP principles and policies in general and as they relate to reduction of multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs); outbreak response and special pathogens; interpretation of epidemiologic and antimicrobial use data; improvement of data infrastructures and data reporting in compliance with National Health Safety Network (NHSN), CMS and other internal metrics; assists in coordination of multidisciplinary initiatives; participates in committees; and educates and mentors staff.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Management and Leadership
Leads the development of the IPC program and ASP in close collaboration with health system and hospital leadership and relevant stakeholders
Leads the maintenance of infection specific rates and antimicrobial utilization at or below national best practice
Leads the development of the annual goals and plan with relevant stakeholders for implementation for review and approval
Leads system and assists with local infectious outbreak investigations and ensures emergency preparedness
Works with physicians, organizational leaders, community leaders, and staff to promote understanding of IPC and ASP regulations and functions
Monitors detection and reporting of HAIs and antimicrobial use on a systematic basis using NHSN definitions with relevant stakeholders
Performs reviews of Epidemiological Reports to detect clustering of pathogenic organisms or increases in rates of infection in patient population
Oversees preparation of annual reports, Risk Assessment and Surveillance data presented to various committees with relevant stakeholders
Conducts the annual Assessment of IPC and ASP with relevant stakeholders for review and approval by the various committees
Assists with reviews of State and Federal regulations/laws governing IPC and ASP to include JTC, and CMS Standards; advises appropriate leaders and physicians of new and/or revised regulations
Is responsible for directing, managing and ensuring compliance with the IPC and ASP standards of the organization. This serves as a resource for the organization, health system, and community. This role also acts as a key facilitator for the Joint Commission (TJC) preparation and is a primary resource for the continued readiness team on all standards related to IPC and ASP
Collaborates with relevant stakeholders to ensure maintenance of and compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards
Assists in establishing the course and direction of IPC and ASP initiatives to be in coordination with strategies of Henry Ford Health
Keeps System and Hospital Leadership, Quality Office, Risk Management and Legal informed of problems and assists in the management and follow-up of IPC-and ASP-related events
Collaborates with clinicians throughout the System in the same and related specialties to develop, implement and annually update work plan which addresses patient need, customer expectations, market opportunities, quality of care, cost of care, and the utilization of resources
Reviews relevant clinical guidelines with relevant stakeholders
Supervises identification of reports and specific communicable diseases to the local Health Department and other official bodies as required by law
Develops an effective partnership with leadership and administrative counterparts reflective of deep respect of the value of physician / administrative dyad relationships
Promotes multi-disciplinary care and planning across the relevant departments and subspecialties inclusive of identifying opportunities to innovate operations and perpetuate the model across the system services
Serves a leading role in operations and strategy cultivation via Committees where the incumbent's expertise can be most effectively utilized
Participates on the Health System's leadership team to ensure achievement of Henry Ford Health goals and objectives
Is proficient in using metrics in managing programs and services
Chairs, attends and participates in the IPC and ASP committee and policy and procedure meetings and oversees the recording and publication of staff meeting minutes in an accurate and timely fashion
Participates in staff meetings for sharing information, problem solving, and directing activities
Actively participates and/or lead meetings and other forums in which information is exchanged and opinions solicited and System direction articulated
Promotes collegiality and teamwork throughout the health system
Participates in organized planning processes to achieve the goals of Henry Ford Health in both the short and long term
Evaluates and provides input in the Departments' IPS and ASP pharmacy responsibilities for different areas and programs in the hospital and affiliated ambulatory practices, surveillance tasks, investigations, and specific initiatives
Evaluates competency assessments and performance issues of the Department's staff
Participates in input on staffing needs and department operating budgets on an annual basis and monitors areas of responsibility for compliance
Participates in direction and support functions of the IPS and ASP pharmacy staff
Promotes departmental and organizational activities for providing courteous customer service to patients, families, visitors and external customers
Participates in Leadership Development activities; implements strategies and processes to improve employee morale and performance
Completes hospital's mandatory knowledge and competency documentation requirements within designated timeframe
Supports innovative thinking in effort allocation carve-outs to enhance Henry Ford Health's national and international presence on principal investigator initiated and federally funded contracts related to IPC and ASP clinical and translational science
Participates in an effective recruitment effort and proactively works on all aspects of faculty and staff retention
Participates as requested in developing and providing opportunities for continuing medical education for faculty, network providers, and Henry Ford-affiliated community physicians
Performs other job-related duties as needed
Program development and assessment
Participates in or leads reviews, revisions and implementation of IPC and ASP policies, procedures and quality improvement initiatives to ensure a reduction in harm with relevant stakeholders
Participates in or leads committees when appropriate that focus on IPC and ASP-related issues
Participates in the evaluation of products which may influence the occurrence of HAIs and antimicrobial agents for consideration of use at the system with relevant stakeholders

Epidemiologic evaluation
Maintains a system for surveillance and reporting of infections among patients and personnel and provides oversight and quality assurance for the Department's surveillance activities
Recommends and implements changes in collaboration with health system and hospital leadershipand relevant stakeholders, when indicated
Maintains a formal internal and external system of communication to inform and direct personnel concerning potential and existing problems
Leads investigations of known or suspected occurrences of infection among patients, personnel or visitors to the hospital
Participates in product recalls associated with potential or identified HAIs or related to antimicrobial usewith relevant stakeholders
Assures that IPC and ASP are in compliance with relevant requirements promulgated by city, state, and federal government agencies as well as those published by accreditation and payor agencies
Conducts drug use investigations and investigations of adverse effects, or effects of inappropriate therapy in collaboration with health system and hospital leadershipand relevant stakeholders
Serves as a liaison to the City and County and State Health, Departments, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention as needed to fulfill the hospital's mandatory reporting requirements for infections and in the conduct of outbreak investigations as appropriate
Teaching
Educates and mentors pharmacy and IPC staff regarding best practices in IPC and ASP
Teaches hospital employees/medical staff regarding best practices in IPC and ASP
Serves as a liaison and information source for IPC and ASP to health system personnel
Maintains written materials, teaching devices, special equipment and other resources for the use of personnel
Teaches patients and families and assists other members of the health team to carry out such teaching, when indicated
Professional development
Stays informed of current techniques and practices in the field; maintains a reference library of relevant material; keeps informed of local, state and federal guidelines and recommendations, and TJC regulations to ensure compliance
Communicates pertinent information to appropriate personnel and assists in evaluation where applicable
Participates in workshops and seminars focused on IPC and ASP inside and outside the health system

Qualifications
Applicants must have an M.D. degree, or equivalent, from an approved LCME medical school, and have satisfactorily completed an Internal Medicine residency program, and an Infectious Diseases fellowship program, from an ACGME accredited program. Candidates must be eligible for Michigan medical licensure and be board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease
5 plus years of supervisory and/or leadership experience in a healthcare setting
2 Two plus (2+) years of experience in ASP and/or IPC with strong/expert working knowledge of infectious diseases, data collection, and/or basis statistics
Minimum 5 years of experience in a leadership role within an academic institution
Strong leadership skills with the ability to advance IPC and ASP
A track record in medical education and federally funded research
Able to function effectively and drive the creation and management of projects and programs to successful outcomes in a highly matrixed organization
Excellent interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills for both clinical and non-clinical audiences, in group settings or one-on-one
Expertise in establishing physician relationships combined with the ability to manage an interdisciplinary team while appreciating and fostering collegial and peer participation from all disciplines
