GENERAL SUMMARY: Works under the supervision of a pharmacist to process orders for medications that require special handling, preparation and/or accountability. The technician has and maintains expertise and skill in the safe handling and use of medications which require special handling, preparation and/or accountability.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Under the supervision of the pharmacist, prepares and pre-packages chemotherapy medications and/or other medications requiring special handling, preparation or accountability.
* Reads and transcribes prescription orders and prepares prescription labels for medication dispensed.
* Maintains appropriate records of medications dispensed.
* Prepares preliminary drug therapy monitoring forms for use by pharmacists in assessing drug treatment.
* Restocks the drug dispensing areas and maintains the cleanliness and aseptic conditions of the Class II Vertical Flow Hood and/or other required equipment.
* Assists in preparing and presenting programs and protocols involving proper handling of chemotherapeutic and/or other medications that require special handling, preparation or accountability.
* Assists in training hospital personnel in the safe handling of chemotherapeutic and/or other special agents.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
* Requires a high school diploma or G.E.D.
* Requires a valid Pharmacy Technician license from the State of Michigan.
* Requires at least one year of experience as a Hospital Pharmacy Technician, performing all functions required of a Hospital Pharmacy Technician; two years Hospital Pharmacy Technician experience preferred.
* Requires the ability to maintain records and perform calculations.
* Must have the ability, when applicable, to safely handle and manipulate cytotoxic and other special drugs and incidental equipment used in drug preparation, including the ability to work aseptically in a vertical flow hood environment.
* Must have the ability, when applicable, to maintain Investigational Drug Research Records and to validate doses ordered using Investigational Drug Protocols.
* Must have the ability to maintain (lift, carry, stock) pharmacy inventory and deliver prescriptions (transport) to nursing units.
* Must have the ability to use a computer keyboard and type approximately 25 WPM.
* Must be able to read, interpret and utilize literature relating to medications that require special handling, preparation or accountability to develop or modify, in consultation with a supervising pharmacist, departmental protocols pertaining to the use of these agents.
